I was recently revisiting some of the principles shared by Andrew Carnegie. One specific phrase has been stuck in my mind: "An end is just the beginning." I call this a magical mindset because it completely reframes how we view achievement.

In our current culture, everyone is obsessed with the "overnight success" or the "unicorn" company. People want the big win immediately, but when you have been in the game for a while, you realize that true success is actually an infinite process.

It is a collection of small, measurable successes that add up to something significant. If you lack the patience to collect those small pieces, you will never build anything that lasts.

Fire Bullets, Then Cannonballs

Jim Collins famously described this in his research on great companies. You don’t start by firing a massive cannonball into the dark. You fire bullets first. These are small, low-risk, low-cost experiments. Each successful "bullet" is a small win that gives you data. Once you have a hit, you have the momentum and the confidence to fire the cannonball.

The "end" of the bullet phase is just the "beginning" of the cannonball phase. This cycle creates a spin. Each small success gives you the energy to move into the next loop. If you try to jump straight to the big dream without the smaller steps, you get tired and you lose your drift. Small successes make it easier to stay fully committed because they make the dream digestible.

The Mantra of Momentum

In my organizations, we have a specific rhythm: Ending strong, starting strong. It is a continuous loop. Most people think of a project as something with a hard stop where you can finally sit down and relax. But a leader distinguishes themselves by showing the team that the "finish line" of one goal is actually the "starting block" for the next.

When you finish a project with excellence, you create the hope and the energy needed to launch the next dream. If you limp across the finish line with a dead battery, you have no power left to start the next lap. You have to program your mindset to see the hand-off.

The Leader’s Solar Panel

To keep this infinite loop moving, a leader can never run flat. You are the power source for your team. People follow you because you make things interesting and because you celebrate the small wins along the way.

You have to find a way to keep your batteries charged. You cannot show up to your team with a dead battery. Whether it is through sport, continuous learning, or giving back, you need to have a "solar panel" that keeps you powered up. If your energy levels drop, the team’s belief in the next beginning will drop with it.

The Next Dream

The magic happens when a small success opens your mind to what is actually possible. What you once thought was a mountain eventually just looks like a small step once you are standing on top of it.

Where is your next beginning? Sometimes it is hidden right in front of your eyes in your current business. Other times it is a bottleneck that needs to be cleared. Regardless of where it is, you have to be hungry for it.

Don't wait for the unicorn. Fire your bullets, celebrate the hits, and keep the loop spinning. Are you just waiting for an end, or are you preparing for the next beginning?
