There is gambling luck such as one-in-a-million roll of the dice that lands out of nowhere; then there is engineered luck. This is luck by design. The legendary golfer Gary Player captured this perfectly when he said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get." As a leader, you cannot afford to stand in the rain, wishing for success to drop into your lap. You have to graft at it. You have to plan it, structure it, and architect it every single day. Luck is a once-off event, but being *lucky* is a continuous state of being that you earn. ## The Daily Lift You never truly graduate as a leader. Leadership is not a finite destination with a ceremony and a diploma; it is an infinite loop. It is a continuous dance where you have to constantly add, subtract, learn, give, and push through when things get tough. To keep this loop spinning and architect your own luck, you have to execute what I call the three daily lifts. Every single day, a leader must focus on three core metrics: 1. **Lift your people.** 2. **Lift performance.** 3. **Lift profits.** When you consistently hit this recipe, you build momentum. This daily grind creates a shared energy that flows directly into your team. They begin to experience the very "luckiness" you are actively engineering behind the scenes. When you win together under a common goal, the entire culture shifts. Winning feels good, and feeling good breeds a pattern of success. ## Arriving First, Leaving Last Arriving first and leaving last is more than just a literal scheduling choice. Metaphorically, it is how you set the example. You are the leader for a reason. If you cannot show up first to model how to navigate uncertainty, how to manage fear, and how to attack challenges head-on, your team has no reason to stay around you. You earn your right to lead daily by being the absolute baseline of reliability. When you establish that relentless momentum, you naturally begin to attract top-tier talent. But let’s be scientifically clear about how talent works: one A-player is worth ten average performers. You do not buy these exceptional people with money alone. Money is a baseline expectation, but true talent is bought with purpose. High performers are looking for a clear vision and an opportunity to make a massive impact. When a purposeful company aligns with an ambitious professional, both sides feel like they have hit the jackpot. ## The Core of True Luck At its foundation, engineered luck requires a deep level of mental toughness. Business ales roles or change overnight, forcing leaders to jump into unfamiliar territories, step into direct sales roles, or completely restructure departments on the fly. Navigating those bouncier roads without losing your grip takes real psychological resilience. If I could go back to the very start of my entrepreneurial journey and give myself a single piece of advice regarding luck, it wouldn't be a trick to find a shortcut. I would tell myself to focus entirely on building momentum and sustainability. True luckiness isn't a random roll of the dice.
