Why cloud is still keeping modern CIOs awake at night

The benefits of cloud computing are very clear. Offering greater efficiency, improved collaboration and cost reduction, as well as scalability, faster time to market, mobility and competitive advantage, moving to the cloud seems a no brainer. Or is it?

Many CIOs are still rather uncertain about cloud computing. For example, a recent survey of CIOs in the healthcare space found that while cloud was on their list of top ten priorities and yet only 30% of these executives had some sort of cloud strategy in place.

The same survey revealed that more than half of the respondents (53%) were most concerned about cloud security. In line with this, control proves a major hurdle as CIOs worry that storing sensitive data outside of the organisation puts them at greater risk. The fear being that if they can’t see it, they no longer feel like they can control it.

According to Western Digital, “the cloud continues to be an asset, a challenge and a priority”.

The data storage company identified the following as some of the key challenges and priorities that CIOs feel when it comes to cloud computing:

#1 Identifying the services and deployment models that meet your needs.

#2 Developing a multi-cloud strategy to control costs and avoid vendor lock-in.

#3 Keeping tabs on data ownership and the costs associated with data mobility.

#4 Managing hybrid cloud and developing strategies to avoid spiralling costs.

How OneView can help

Looking through the list above, the costs related to cloud appear to be a big concern. But wait – didn’t we just list cost reduction as one of the key benefits of cloud computing? Yes, we did, but only when you’re managing your cloud consumption effectively.

RightScale’s 2018 State of the Cloud Report, reveals that a staggering 80% of enterprises cite managing cloud spend as one of their key challenges. This is where a cloud expense management solution like OneView, our enterprise Technology Expense Management system comes into play.

Making it easier to track cloud expenses and accurately forecast and budget for your cloud spend, there’s no longer a risk of accidentally overspending. And when all of your cloud resources are properly managed, CIOs have the visibility they need to ensure that everything is running as it should.
